ALRI welcomes its newest student researcher Cailey Severson. Take a few minutes and get to know Cailey.

Why did you pursue a career in law?
I decided to get a legal education because I wanted to help people who I felt were left behind and disadvantaged in society. I believe that as an advocate, I can use my skills and education to push for legal changes that benefit people who have been disadvantaged. I would start my career as a practicing lawyer in criminal law because many people who are up against the system suffer from poverty and mental health issues and need a good advocate. However, I also see myself moving into non-profit work in the future to do more direct social justice work.

What is your favourite food?
My favourite food is Butter Chicken, which is ironic because my family is from India and my grandparents never cooked Butter Chicken at home. But on Christmas Eve, we always go out to an Indian restaurant for dinner, so now Butter Chicken is a special food in my mind.

Who inspires you?
I’ve always been inspired by my grandparents, who immigrated to Canada and had 10 kids. They’ve always modelled really important qualities, such as hard work, generosity, and patience.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I love Italy. I went a couple years ago and fell in love. The food was amazing and the architecture was some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen.

What would your superhero power be?
I would like to be able to fly because then I would have free and fast transportation forever.

What is your most memorable moment in your career?
Doing my first summary disposition. It was a very stressful experience, but I received encouraging feedback afterwards which was a confidence booster.

If you were a crayola crayon, what would the name of your colour be?
Orange Squash.
